Is your business funding ready?

In this article, my recent encounter with a client who ran into trouble while trying to secure funding, inspired this series.

This is a series of emails to help you prepare for funding. Not just investor funding. Any funding:

  • Purchase order
  • Invoice discounting
  • Bank overdraft

All the funding you look for in a cash flow crisis.

So, back to the client:

This client had done what many founders work so hard to do. He landed a corporate client. A big invoice. Real momentum.

The only problem was the corporate took 60 days to pay.

So he went looking for invoice funding to free up that cash. And that is when everything started to unravel.

Because here is what no one tells you.

Growth does not break your business. It exposes what you ignored while you were growing.

When he applied for funding, a few things came up immediately.

He was not properly registered with the South African Revenue Service as he did not have a registered tax representative.
Because of that, he could not register for VAT.
And when funders asked for management accounts, there were none in place since the business started.

What should have taken a few days turned into months of admin, stress, and delays.

Eventually, he got paid. But not without pressure, scrambling, and unnecessary risk.

And this is the part that matters.

None of these were complex problems. They were foundational ones.

The things that feel small when you are busy building. The things that are easy to postpone. The things that quietly become blockers later.

This is where compliance and financial foundations come in

Running a healthy business is not just about making sales. It is about making sure the structure behind those sales can support growth.

There are two sides to this.

The legal and compliance side

This includes the basics you already know you should have in place.

Things like:

  • Being properly registered with SARS
  • Appointing a tax representative
  • Registering for VAT when required
  • Keeping your tax affairs up to date
  • Having a valid tax clearance status

These are not optional when it comes to funding. If they are not in place, access to capital becomes difficult or impossible.

Then there is the financial side

This is not always legally required, but it is just as important.

  • Management accounts
  • Basic financial tracking
  • Understanding your cash position
  • Knowing whether you are actually profitable

These are the tools that help you run the business properly and prove to others that you are in control.

You do not need to do all of this yourself.

In fact, you probably should not.

If finance, compliance, or marketing is not your strength, your time is better spent growing the business and letting the right people support you in the areas they are good at.

Trying to do everything yourself often leads to gaps. And those gaps only show up when it matters most.

This email is the start of a series

Over the next few weeks, I am going to walk you through what it really takes to run a compliant, healthy, and funding ready business.

We will cover:

  • Financial compliance and what funders actually look for
  • Management accounts and how they help you make better decisions
  • Cash flow forecasting and how to stay ahead of pressure
  • And later, areas like HR, sales, and marketing

For now, let’s start with the foundation

I have put together a simple compliance checklist that covers the key financial and statutory requirements your business should have in place, and how each one impacts your ability to access funding.

You can access it here:

Take a few minutes to go through it. Tick off what is done. Highlight what is missing.

Because it is much easier to fix these things now than when a funder, a corporate, or a deadline is waiting on you.

In the next email, we will talk about management accounts, what they are, why funders care about them, and how you can use them monthly to make better decisions.

If you would like help getting your compliance in place or understanding what your business is missing, get in touch with me.

We can walk through your current setup, highlight the gaps, and help you put the right foundations in place so you are not scrambling when opportunities come up.
